Heritage, Family, and Legacy: A Celebration of Black History

GVP scholars are preparing for an exciting month of celebrating Black History. This years’ theme is Heritage, Family, and Legacy as staff and scholars take the month to explore their current role in the community and how they will lead and impact the future.

“ For Black History Month we want to take time to discuss the importance of pride in our past,  as well as make room for understanding the effects of our present choices so that we can have confidence in our future,” said Jane Brunner, Media Center Specialist.

During Black History Month, scholars will also have the opportunity to become authors as they write a lapbook autobiography, complete with photographs and illustrations. Parents will be asked to help scholars gather information about their ancestors and family history. Scholars are encouraged to include their own personal interests and personality traits, as well as future aspirations and goals.

Completed autobiographies will be on display during Black History Month celebrations.

Letters to families will go home with scholars on the Monday of the week they have Media Center to explain the project.
